Preschoolers are eager to do more things for themselves, including brushing their teeth. However, young children still need your assistance with this important task. The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children age 6 and under have an adult help them brush.
Turning brushing into a fun event makes the routine a little easier. Here are three ways parents can inspire their young children to brush.
Create a Brushing Playlist
Young children have a short attention span. The recommended two minutes of brushing will seem like an eternity to them. The time will fly by if you play a silly song while they brush.
While it’s important to brush for two minutes, it’s equally important that the brushing is thorough. Many young children will only brush their front teeth because that’s all they can see! When it’s your turn to take the toothbrush, make sure you brush their back teeth.
Reward Good Brushing Habits
After your child brushes their teeth, reward them with a small, inexpensive toy. Stickers, pencils, bouncy balls, and Matchbox cars motivate young children. Keep the toys in a bucket in the bathroom. That way, your child will see their potential rewards every time they brush.
Buy the Right Toothbrush
Toothbrushes should be replaced every three months, or as soon as they start fraying. Take your child with you when it’s time to shop for a new brush. Let them choose a brush that’s their favourite colour or has their favourite cartoon character on it.
And make sure the toothbrush is the right size for their mouth. An adult size toothbrush is too large for preschoolers. A small, soft brush is best.
